Thesis
In the early twentieth century, scientific advances gave people a greater degree of control over nature. This eventually led to environmental exploitation and overuse of chemical pollutants. In the early 1960’s, a quiet but determined marine biologist, Rachel Carson, challenged the widespread use of chemical pesticides. Using the power of her pen, Carson crafted passionate prose which spurred many to rethink man’s relationship with nature. Her legacy continues in the modern environmental movement, new legislation, and a new generation of environmental activists. |
"she [devoted] her biology and her writing to a larger problem, the environmental damage brought by pesticides [and] caused society to rethink its relationship to the natural world."
"The Journey Begins, The Tradition Continues", Narrated by actress Kaiulani Lee, Rachel Carson Council, 2007

"I believe that through her writing and her congressional testimony Carson laid the ground work of an eventual popular movement to protect the earth and humans from themselves and their own science and so should be considered to have laid the foundations for an environmental movement."
